While serving as Tribal Chairman of his Nation, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation near Sisseton, South Dakota. Robert Shepherd served in many capacities for both his tribe and his nation. Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate is known for its economic diversification, cultural strength and exercising their sovereignty.
As Chairman he formally held regional and national positions such as: Board Secretary of the National Congress of American Indians, Co-Chair of the Tribal Interior Budget Council, Vice-President of the Great Plains Chairman’s Association, Chairman of the Great Sioux Nation of South Dakota, South Dakota Board of Military Affairs and Board Secretary of United Tribes Technical College.
Before being elected to the position of Tribal Chairman his tribal employment experiences consist of: Tribal Planner, Emergency Management, Zoning, Economic Development, Small Business Specialist, Tourism and Parks & Recreation.
He joined the U.S. Navy and became an honorably discharged combat veteran after 7 years of service. Some experiences he received is law enforcement officer certified, certified military training officer, safety officer qualified, military leadership certified, supervised numerous different subordinates over the years and conducted training and real world exercises.
Mr. Shepherd graduated high school from Tiospa Zina Tribal School and attended Sisseton Wahpeton Community College, he holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Dakota and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Mary.
He is dedicated to promoting government relations, economic diversification and independence, also advocating for tribal rights & sovereignty for his Nation and all of Indian Country.
